How LSAC CAS GPA is calculated

LSAC converts every undergraduate course to a unified 4.0 scale so applicants from different schools are comparable. Key rules:

  • Scale highlights: A+ = 4.33, A = 4.00, A− = 3.67, AB = 3.50, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B− = 2.67, BC = 2.50, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C− = 1.67, CD = 1.50, D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00, D− = 0.67, DE/DF = 0.50, E/F = 0.00.
  • Quarter credits → semester hours: multiply by 0.67 before computing points.
  • Pass/Satisfactory/Credit: excluded from GPA and hours.
  • Fails (including NP/U/NC with attempted credit): count as 0.00 and add to hours.
  • Withdrawals: W/WP excluded. WF counts only if punitive at your school.
  • Repeats: LSAC counts every graded attempt that appears on the transcript.
Tip: If your transcript uses AB/BC/CD/DE, LSAC converts them to half steps (3.50, 2.50, 1.50, 0.50) respectively.

Example LSAC GPA calculations

Example 1: Standard semester courses

Courses: A (3cr), B+ (3cr), B (4cr), A− (3cr), C+ (3cr)

  • Quality points: 12.00 + 9.99 + 12.00 + 11.01 + 6.99 = 51.99
  • Included hours: 16.00
  • GPA = 51.99 / 16 = 3.249

Example 2: Quarter hours + Pass/Fail

Courses: A (4 qtr), B− (5 qtr), C (3 qtr), P (1 qtr), NP (1 qtr)

  • Semester hours: 2.68 + 3.35 + 2.01 + 0.67 (excluded P) + 0.67 (NP) = 8.71 included, 0.67 excluded
  • Quality points: 4.00×2.68 + 2.67×3.35 + 2.00×2.01 + 0.00×0.67 = 23.684
  • GPA ≈ 23.684 / 8.71 = 2.719

Example 3: Repeats + WF* + S

Courses: Bio I D (3), Bio I retake B (3), Gov A− (3), Literature WF* (3), Music S (2)

  • Included hours: 12.00 (S excluded)
  • Quality points: 1.00×3 + 3.00×3 + 3.67×3 + 0.00×3 = 23.01
  • GPA = 23.01 / 12 = 1.917

FAQs

What’s a good LSAC GPA?

For T14 schools, 3.7–3.9+. A 3.5–3.7 is competitive at many programs. Lower GPAs can be offset with a strong LSAT and compelling application materials.

Do community college and transfer credits count?

Yes. LSAC includes all undergraduate work completed before your first bachelor’s degree.

Is A+ really 4.33 for LSAC?

Yes. Unlike many campuses, LSAC treats A+ as 4.33.

What about withdrawals?

W/WP are excluded. WF counts only if your school marks it as punitive.

Can I change my LSAC GPA?

You can only change it with additional undergraduate coursework before LSAC processes your transcripts. Graduate courses do not affect LSAC GPA.
